Real Madrid starts U.S. tour in Chicago

AP - Real Madrid arrived in Chicago on Thursday, boasting stars such as David Beckham, Michael Owen and Ronaldo for its two-game tour of the United States.

The nine-time European club champion meets Mexican power Chivas Guadalajara on Saturday at Soldier Field. Then, Real Madrid meets Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy on Monday in Carson, Calif., before heading to Beijing, Tokyo and Bangkok.

"It's a chance to show what European soccer offers," midfielder Jose Maria Gutierrez said during Thursday's news conference.

Saturday's match is the first on a world tour that will include Real Madrid's first game against an MLS opponent in the Galaxy.

For Beckham and Owen, this is the second trip to the U.S. in six weeks. They played here with England's national team in late May.

Other players on the Real Madrid roster include Portugal's Figo, Brazil's Roberto Carlos, and Uruguayans Carlos Diogo and Pablo Garcia, who will make their debuts with the team.

"It's really a good experience for us to come here," said Real Madrid director of sport Emiliano Butragueno. "We really hope that the two games we're going to play here are going to be very exciting for both the players and those fans who are going to attend the games. We know that (soccer) is growing fast here in the United States, and we would like to (promote that). ... We are going to do our best to make a great impression and to make these two games something memorable."

Saturday's matchup pits one of Europe's storied franchises against one of Mexico's best teams.

"Previously, Mexico didn't have experience internationally," midfielder Raul said. "But now ... things have changed."
