2007 All-Stars to play in Vegas
Las Vegas has been chosen to host the 2007 All-Star Game, the
first time the league's midseason showcase will be held in a city that
doesn't have a team, a person familiar with the situation said.
Commissioner David Stern will make the announcement in Las Vegas on
Friday, said the source, who asked not to be identified. The source said
the game will be played at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus.
League executives have spent months negotiating with officials from Las
Vegas, where casino operators agreed in April to remove the game from
their betting lines.
Stern made removal of the game from sports books a condition of awarding
the event to the city, where Mayor Oscar Goodman has spent years trying
to lure a major pro sports franchise.
The idea for Las Vegas to host the event was raised by Sacramento Kings
co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. The Maloof family owns The Palms Casino
Resort in Las Vegas. The sports book at The Palms doesn't accept bets on
league games.
"If, in fact, Las Vegas gets the game, it'd be the biggest event since
Elvis," Gavin Maloof said. |
