Group urges soccer players: Stop spitting

AP - A group trying to keep Britain clean wants soccer players to stop spitting - and that includes Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.
The charity "Keep Britain Tidy," in a letter to the head of the players' union, says players spitting on the field sets a bad example for children.
The charity also singled out an incident last season in which Bolton's El Hadji Diouf spat at Portsmouth player Arjan de Zeeuw.
"Spitting remains the ultimate insult, a contemptuous gesture drowning in hate," the group's chief executive Alan Woods said. "But it is not just revolting - it has a cost."
"Football has done much to bring people together and combat problems such as racism," Woods added. "Now it's time to tackle spitting."
The head of the players union, Gordon Taylor, defended is constituents.
"They should appreciate that footballers run about six miles every game and sometimes they need to clear their air passages," Taylor said.
Often seen chewing gum on the sidelines, Ferguson was also criticized for spitting out his gum on the field.
