NFL fines two Chicago Bears $50,000
each for fight
Reuters - The National Football League fined Chicago Bears offensive
linemen Olin Kreutz and Fred Miller $50,000 each for their fight at an
FBI shooting range that left Miller with a broken jaw, the league said
on Friday.
NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said the players' brawl last month
violated the league's special conduct policy that governs off-field
behavior when it endangers NFL employees and casts a negative light on
the league and its players.
Miller, who missed one game, a victory over the San Francisco 49ers,
needed surgery and had his broken jaw wired shut.
Miller and the Bears originally said the injury was caused when he
slipped on a child's toy at his home. After the truth came out in
published reports, Bears coach Lovie Smith said the matter would be
handled internally.
Alcohol apparently was involved and Kreutz was reported to have had a
glass smashed on his head. He did not miss any games for the Bears, who
lead the NFC North Division with a surprising 9-3 record.
No criminal charges were brought, although the FBI launched an
investigation of its shooting ranges that allow invited guests and
drinking away from the range.
