Basic rules common to all poker games

 Poker is played with a standard deck of fifty two cards. For some games of poker, the joker is left in the deck as a wild card. We do not look into any games which use a joker, however. Suits are of equal value in poker. A flush in spades is no better than a flush of harts. Minimum of two players are required to play poker. The upper number of players is limited by the size of the deck. In general, Hold'em features no more than nine or ten players and 7-stud seven or eight players. Poker is not a team sport, you play for yourself and nobody else. Nobody else sees your cards, and nobody else should, but you. The world "hand" is used interchangeably to mean both the combination of cards held by one player, and the play of a single game from the initial deal to the awarding of the pot to the winner.

 Each game begins with antes or blind bets and then the cards are dealt. The game is on. The goal is not to win the most pots, but to win the most money. Next, there is a series of betting rounds, in between which more cards are dealt. As the hand progresses through the betting rounds, the individual bets are pulled together into the pot. A player is awarded the pot if all of his opponents fold and he or she is the only one left, or if the player has the highest ranking hand at the showdown.
