 Playing the game

Blackjack's popularity grew as much at the kitchen table as at the casino table. It is an easy game to learn. But you have to realize that the game played at the kitchen table is very different from the one found in casinos around the world. Even if you have played the game in an online casino after  having learned it at home, it's important to look at a few things.

It doesn't matter how many players are seated at the blackjack table at the online casinos. Blackjack is a one-on-one game between yourself and the dealer. he players are not trying to beat each other, only the dealer. Each player is playing a separate game, The only thing the players have in common is that their cards come from the same deck and are distributed by the same dealer.

The object of the blackjack is to beat the dealer. the winner is whoever has closest to 21, without going over 21. You reach 21 by adding up the values of the cards. Tens and face cards are worth ten points, the other cards count as their numerical values, and aces are worth either one ore eleven, at the discretion of the player. If you take a hit and that card puts your total over 21, you lose automatically. At the end if your cards total closer to 21, you win. If the dealers hand is closer to 21, you lose. When a player receives a blackjack, he wins a bonus, usually three-to-two payoff, depending on the online casinos. The only time a player can receive a blackjack and not get paid immediately is if the dealer also has a blackjack. In this case, it's a push, an no one gets paid.

One of the attractions of blackjack is the ability to increase your bets in mid-hand if you feel you have a good chance to win. When you have the chance to make these bets, you should take advantage of them. One of these situations is called doubling (note, the rules may vary by online casinos). This means the casino will allow you to make a second bet equal in size to your first bet. In return for this right, you agree to accept only one more hand. You cannot take a hit and then double, it's only possible after your first two cards. Some casinos allow you to double for less than your original bet - you should avoid it. If you win your bet, you will be paid even money for the two bets, and receive double your original wager.

The second option to increase your original bet is know as splitting. When you receive two cards of the same value, you are allowed to match your original bet, and split the two cards into separate hands. Each card of the pair becomes the first card of a separate, totally unrelated, hand, and each wager applies only to the hand to which it is attached. Since the two hands are independent, you may win both, lose both or win one and lose one. Depending on the rules of the online casinos you play at, you may split hands up to four times. The rules concerning how many times you may split vary from casino to casino. The only card that has different splitting rules is the Ace. When you receive two Aces and split them, you only receive one card on each Ace. In many online casinos you can double after splitting. The same rules apply for doubling on a split hand as would for an original hand.
