Addicted Gamblers Have Unique Brain Images

The Los Angeles Times have reported on a study done on gamblers’ brains when they have become addicted gamblers. Pathological gamblers have been discovered to have differences biologically in their brain from their non pathological counterparts. It is not only that after the fact scientists can see differences in brain images and activity between compulsive and recreational gamblers, but it is also the fact that prior to even gaming for the first time, scientist have announced that they can predict who will be a compulsive gambler. This comes at a time when so many people have become interested not only in what distinguishes a gambling addict from a recreational gambling player but also in light of online casinos there has been more knowledge necessary for the research of gambling topics.
Researchers have states that those pathological gamblers in land based or in online casinos have brains that appear different from the rest of Americans that can gamble only for fun. Online casinos players are included in the study although the sample size did not differentiate between who were online casinos players and who were land based casino players. The addicted gamblers differ in neurotransmitter activity as well and actually resemble those with diseases caused by lack of serotonin.

There are an estimated 1.6% of the populations whom are addicted to gambling in land based or online casinos and on top of that another 2% of the population has stated that they have some type of gambling problem as though they do not consider themselves as gambling addicts. Brown Medical School has produced these results and Jon Grant whom wrote “Stop Me Because I Can’t Stop Myself” has participated extensively in this study.

This study comes weeks after another study concerned with online casinos players whom claimed to be addicted relation to obsessive compulsive disorder. In this study online casinos players were give the obsessive compulsive disorder inventory test and then competes on similarities and differences between themselves and people diagnosed with OCD. Researchers were also interested to see if online casinos players could get the OCD diagnosis if the questions were altered to only have to do with online casinos questions and online casinos related questions. The results here have not been fully analyzed but statistical significance was not proven at an extensive level.

The issues of gambling addiction has hit online casinos players, land based players and the like and therefore this research comes at a most appropriate time. Many online casinos have even discussed the prospect of investing more money into online casinos and gambling research and online casinos are recognizing that the responsibility of taking care of the addicted gamblers is also their responsibility. There is so much more to learn about this phenomenon but it has been amazing to see how online casinos and land based casinos are relying on these results. Many more studies are expected to happen in the very near future and to follow suit with this study’s line of investigation and results.
